Mr. Gibson assigned our lab partners in bio today and I ended up with Hugh Morrow. Carla was staring daggers at me because she was so jealous.

Hugh is so nice and very prepared, so I sat on my stool and stared at him while he fiddled with our microscope and slides. “You’re drooling!” Carla hissed at me, so loudly I was sure Hugh had heard and blushed so hard my face was stinging!

Ginny’s fall semester continued through milestones I knew well. She loved English and hated PE. She was making friends, including Karen, whoever she was, but there was still no mention of my mom. Ginny wasn’t getting along with her roommate, who was called Bev. At first it appeared to me to be the usual stuff: textbooks borrowed unasked and wet towels strewn across the floor. Before long it was copying homework, followed by long, moody silences when confronted.

As the homecoming dance approached, there was a lot of speculation about who would go with whom. Ginny worked hard at planting herself in Hugh’s path, whether studying at the library or hanging out at the convenience store across the street from campus, where boarding students bought their snacks (and smokes). Hugh appeared to go on, polite and helpful in biology class, and happily oblivious the rest of the time.

My heart ached for young Ginny. I had the same kind of weak-in-the-knees, heart-thumping, crimson-blushing crush on Chris when I’d started as a sixth grader at Busman’s Harbor’s combined middle and high school and he was a junior and a quarterback on the football team. Like Hugh, Chris had been polite when I’d been directly in his path and couldn’t have picked me out of a lineup the rest of the time. Then we’d remet eighteen years later, when he was a grown-up, complicated man and I was a grown-up, complicated woman.

During the start of fall term, Ginny never, ever reflected on the death of Bob Denison. She never mentioned any of the Wednesday Club daughters at all.

The fall continued for Ginny: new friends, bad roommate, unrequited crush, until the end of October.
